His love endures forever
Psalm 136 is one of the most memorable passages of Scripture. It's great (as is all Scripture), a wonderful reminder to us that God's love is greater than our sin and greater than everything else and, as is the oft-repeated phrase in the psalm, His love endures forever. He who set the heavens into place, He who judges the nations, He who ultimately would send His Son to die and wipe our sins from us--His love endures forever. We need not be heavy-laden, because we are forgiven, because He has bought us with His blood.
Different people have different concepts of love; different thinking about what it means to love someone and how that should play out between you. I have my own concept of love between Christians, which is still under construction (as we webmasters say). But who can deny that it is loving to do what God did for us, to send His Son to die to redeem and reconcile us to Himself. There is nothing, nothing that is greater than that. And while we sit around and try to understand God's Word and also try to make sense of one another within the Body of Christ, let us sit back and be amazed at the God whose love endures forever. One who remembers that will have a much harder time being shaken in life.
I cannot read the Gospel of John without remembering those four words. It's amazing to me to think about it--that even when we fail our God time and time again, His love endures forever. When we come back that thousandth time to confess our sin and beg for forgiveness (which we already have because we are justified), His love endures forever. His love toward us endures forever! Hallelujah!
"Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His steadfast love endures forever." (Psalm 136:1, ESV)
