Success Takes Work

This last semester, I got a 3.8 GPA, an accomplishment that I am proud of (but that I hope to surpass this summer). But this last semester, I also worked more for those grades than I have any previous semester. I read my butt off, did my homework, studied for my tests, and generally made sure that I knew what I was talking about because I was determined to make As in my classes (and in all but one, I did).

As summer has started and I'm busy in my summer session classes (an upper level history course and an upper level economics course), I've been confronted with a major truth that every college student must discover: that success takes a great deal of work. I'm reading a volumonous amount of material each night to stay on track with my history class, because I have three books to read between now (actually between this past Monday) and Thursday, June 19. And I will finish the first of those three books today.

People don't do well just because they sit on their butt and play X-box all day (that's a heads-up to our wonderful campus minister ), but because they are willing to buckle down and work toward the goal. The ultimate goal, of course, is to glorify God in our work and our studies as a student. It's definitely not pleasing to God to just shuck off our duties as the students He has called us to be to do other random things. He's called us to be diligent and to work hard at what He has called us to do. I want to succeed this semester, and I want to succeed because I have worked hard and deserve that success.

"Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, 24knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ." (Colossians 3:23-24, ESV)
