Hymns

In my inability to find a job of late due to a lousy job market in College Station, I've been spending a lot of time sitting on my butt in my apartment. While doing that, I've been working to memorize hymns. With the third release from Indelible Grace on the horizon, I've been going through the RUF Hymnbook and trying to learn many of the hymns therein with which I am unfamiliar. I must say that the lyrics to these songs are excellent, and some of the new tunes mesh excellently with the text (Let us Love and Sing and Wonder being a notable exception).

Why do I do this? Because I absolutely love the rich texts and music that is contained in hymnody. I feel more edified and refreshed from learning hymns than almost anything else (almost). And memorizing those texts and having them constantly coming to my mind is a great aid in sanctification.

I think that it would be a great aid to many to attempt to actually commit to memory the songs we sing, because of how great the texts are and because of the deep Scriptural truths that they bring to our minds. Few things are more excellent that having the Gospel at the forefront of our minds. To remember the basic message of joy given to us--that another has come to wash away our sins and cleanse us of all unrighteousness, and because of His merit we have peace with God. Hallelujah!
