Of The Dark Knight and Roller Coasters

The 16-man raid on Pittsburgh, part 2

On Thursday, someone who figured we had all already seen The Dark Knight asked, in a discussion on whether we should see it as a group, "How many people have not yet seen The Dark Knight?" Half the group raised their hands. "OK, yeah, we have to go see it then."

So, on Friday morning, we went to go see The Dark Knight on IMAX. It was amusing to walk up to the ticket line with a group of 16. "What he said," was the ticket order for the last 10 or so people in line. We got really good seats since the movie has been out for a bit. The Pittsburgh IMAX theater showed a big IMAX intro that demoed its sound and picture quality...which it did using retarded neon wireframes. Yeah, like the ones produced using the C4 chip for Mega Man X2 on the Super Nintendo. It was retarded. The demo also crashed in the middle and had to be restarted. We also saw the lamest preview ever for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

Of course, seeing the movie on IMAX was excellent, although someone left the lights on in the camera room, severely diminishing the picture quality. Also, we could see bugs landing on the screen in the back, which drove me nuts.

In the afternoon, we went to a roller coaster park called Kennywood, just north of Pittsburgh. Apparently, Kennywood is decently famous in roller coaster history or some such thing. We were there for about five hours. I got to ride some really creative coasters. One neat thing was that the roller coasters were built along the natural topography (Pittsburgh is an extremely hilly area), which made them even better. There was one coaster that had a 60 degree or so decline for the downward slope, and it sent you through another coaster. It was really, really awesome.

There was also a wet ride where we had to sit on top of each other. That was surprisingly not all that awkward. There was another coaster where the rules specified that 2 people had to ride per car (which seated 2); nobody could ride alone. Also, the heavier person had to sit on the left, and the lighter person on the right. We quickly discovered why; the ride had lots of really sharp turns that caused the person on the ride to smash into the one on the left. It was really a lot of fun.
